Amanda Ansorge, FITWORKS Mentor

My story is not a unique one, but it is mine. I am 36 years old, and I am a mother of a teenage daughter. Like many women my age, I am overweight.  For over a decade I kept telling myself that this is what happens when you have a child. You gain weight and you don't have time or money to go to the gym to try and get back into shape. I told myself for years that this is what happens and to just accept it.

Finally, on June 11, 2015, I had enough. I could no longer stand to look at myself in the mirror when I was getting dressed.

I looked at a few gyms, until I came across FITWORKS.  I met with one of the head staff at FITWORKS, and immediately got the feeling that I was in a safe place. Peter sat and talked with me about why I wanted to join a gym, why I had never joined one before, and what was my goals were. Like many other people, I had the fear of people judging me, I didn't feel like I had the time nor the money, and most of all, I was afraid of failing.  Peter assured me that the staff at FITWORKS would welcome me and help me in any area I needed help with.  I signed up that day, and the next day I showed up ready for a journey that I did not know that I would have so much fun on.

I signed up for personal training sessions with Jake. He and I talked about my goals and my problem areas.  Not once has Jake ever made me feel as if I was wasting his time. In fact, on days that I am not working with him, he always seeks me out and asks how I am doing. That goes for all the trainers – Mike, Nick, Brandon, Kelly, T.J and more.  They all have this way to motivate you to keep you coming back and pushing yourself.

When I started my journey with Jake, I had very low self-esteem, and I would put myself down through sarcastic comments.  Jake pointed that out to me, and in a loving brother kind of way told me to stop – that I was a great and wonderful person, that I need to start seeing that in myself.  Jake also works with my schedule at work due to my long hours so that I can get my training sessions in with him each month. Not once has he complained; instead he motivates me even more, and tells me how great I am doing.

August 11, 2015, marked my two months, and I had my first fit evaluation with Jake.  I was so scared and thought that I might not be working hard enough. I thought I would not only let myself down, but also let him down. To my surprise, I had lost 7.5 inches. To some people that may not seem like a whole lot, but for me it feels pretty darn good.  I went down a dress size, and I have more energy than I did two months ago.  My teenage daughter has even joined the gym with me, and it has become one of our daily routines.

“Through FITWORKS, I have found a love and passion for fitness.”

Through FITWORKS, I found a love and passion for fitness. I find myself pushing harder and harder each day to get closer to my goal.  Also through FITWORKS, my daughter and I have grown closer together.  My daughter tells me all the time how proud she is of me and that she loves spending time with me.  What teenage daughter wants to be seen in public with her "embarrassing" mother?

My journey started with walking through the doors at FITWORKS and continues every day.  Each new day is getting me closer and closer to my short term goals, which will then lead me to my long term goal: to be around and to be healthy not just for my daughter, but also for her children one day.

“Just remember a journey of a thousand miles starts with one step.”

If I could tell anyone that is having the same dilemma I had two months ago, it’s if I can do it, you can too.  Just remember a journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. Just keep on keeping on. I promise you, FITWORKS will be a decision that you will not regret. It has become a second home to me, and the trainers and other staff are like my second family. I look forward to them being a part of many of my milestones to come.
